having detailed our troubles with our trek&#8217;s obsolete helicomatic hub in <a href=\"\/log\/2009\/05\/15\/trek-helicomatic-bearings\/\" title=\"helicomatic\">part one<\/a> of this two part series, one might wonder why we don&#8217;t &#8216;upgrade&#8217; to something in more &#8216;advanced&#8217; or at least in better shape.<\/p>\n<p>notwithstanding the fact that new parts will never be available and the time a dipshit on the sidewalk actually touched our trek and said &#8216;you should get a different hub&#8217;, we know that italian shit is in vogue &#8211; touch\u00c3\u00a9 &#8211; but we have always been francophiles at heart. we would rather push a citro\u00c3\u00abn than drive a fiat. <\/p>\n<p>also the <em>helix<\/em> onto which the cluster fits looks cool as shit.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/log\/images\/20090428H.jpg\" alt=\"helicomatic cone\" title=\"helicomatic cone\" \/><br \/>\npoor pockmarked cone. will i ever find another?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/log\/images\/20090428I.jpg\" alt=\"helicomatic cone\" title=\"helicomatic cone\" \/><br \/>\nscrew that cone onto the axle.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/log\/images\/20090428J.jpg\" alt=\"helicomatic hub\" title=\"helicomatic hub\" \/><br \/>\nplace on the washer and lock nut.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/log\/images\/20090428K.jpg\" alt=\"helicomatic hub\" title=\"helicomatic hub\" \/><br \/>\nflip the wheel over and pour bearings in other side of hub.<br \/>\n(we never removed this cone from axle.)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/log\/images\/20090428L.jpg\" alt=\"helicomatic hub\" title=\"helicomatic hub\" \/><br \/>\n13 bearings on &#8216;left&#8217; side of hub.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/log\/images\/20090428M.jpg\" alt=\"helicomatic hub\" title=\"helicomatic hub\" \/><br \/>\nwe forgot the plastic ring, and spilled the bearings when flipping wheel over to add it.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/log\/images\/20090428N.jpg\" alt=\"helicomatic hub\" title=\"helicomatic hub\" \/><br \/>\nremove axle carefully and replace the plastic ring.<br \/>\n(do this before ever putting axle in, by the way).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/log\/images\/20090428O.jpg\" alt=\"helicomatic hub\" title=\"helicomatic hub\" \/><br \/>\nhold up ring when you put bearings in for 2nd time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/log\/images\/20090428P.jpg\" alt=\"helicomatic hub\" title=\"helicomatic hub\" \/><br \/>\n13 bearings, again.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/log\/images\/20090428Q.jpg\" alt=\"helicomatic hub\" title=\"helicomatic hub\" \/><br \/>\npack with grease and seal.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/log\/images\/20090428R.jpg\" alt=\"helicomatic hub\" title=\"helicomatic hub\" \/><br \/>\ntighten up.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/log\/images\/20090428S.jpg\" alt=\"maillard\" title=\"maillard\" \/><br \/>\nvive la france!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>~ NOTE: continued from part one!
